Being Ambitious, Knowledgeable, and Persistent

Today, I read a sentence, a short passage from “The Family Letters of Zeng Guofan”, which goes as follows:

For scholars reading, first, they should be ambitious; second, they should be knowledgeable; third, they should be persistent. Those with ambition will never be content with mediocrity. Those with knowledge will understand that learning is endless and will not be complacent with a little achievement. Just like the River God who thought the sea was small when he first saw it, or the frog in the well who thought the sky was only as big as the well - these are all examples of those without knowledge. Those with persistence will surely succeed in everything they do.
